Alexandra Palace events and the People's Palace

Alexandra Palace was created as a place of entertainment and recreation for the public. It opened on May 24, 1873, but fire destroyed it only sixteen days later. A replacement opened in 1875, continuing the idea of a People's Palace for Victorian London.

Public ownership was secured through an Act of Parliament in 1900. The park and building are now cared for by the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust, which maintains and restores the estate while running cultural, leisure and learning programmes. The surrounding parkland remains an important part of the setting, with views across London.

Great Hall, West Hall and the Theatre

Ally Pally is a collection of event spaces rather than a single auditorium. The Great Hall and West Hall host major occasions within the wider Palace. The West Hall occupies the area that was an Italian-style formal courtyard garden in the 1875 building, connecting today's event space with the site's earlier design.

The Victorian Theatre reopened in 2018 after restoration of the East Wing. Its auditorium offers a different setting from the large halls. The Circle's fixed balcony seats remain in place across staging configurations, while other parts of the Theatre can be arranged differently for individual productions.

Theatre seating and access

The Theatre's Stalls combine level and tiered seating. The front rows through row K have level access, while rows L through U are tiered. In the Circle, rows A through G are tiered.

Circle Right has lift access from the foyer; Circle Left is reached by stairs. Wheelchair positions are provided in the Stalls and Circle, and the main Theatre entrance is reached through the East Court's step-free slope. These distinctions give a more useful picture of the auditorium than treating all Stalls or Circle seats as identical.

Arriving for the right event space

Great Hall and West Hall events normally use the Palm Court entrance on the west side of the Palace. The Theatre uses the East Court side, so the named performance space also identifies a different arrival point. The venue's visitor information includes an event-day map showing the different locations. For a broader choice of live music, explore concerts on TixChoice.
