Angel Stadium events and the Big A

The Angels moved into their Anaheim home in 1966 after earlier seasons at Wrigley Field and Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles. The stadium’s first exhibition game took place that April. Its baseball history later included the All-Star Games of 1967, 1989 and 2010, along with the 2002 World Series, when the Angels beat San Francisco in the deciding game to win the championship.

The original ground was built with narrow foul territory and steeply rising seating decks. Its giant A-frame scoreboard supplied the Big A nickname, tying a piece of stadium architecture to the venue’s wider identity. The stadium magazine describes the building as a three-level structure, with terraced bullpens in the outfield adding another distinctive part of its baseball arrangement.

From a multi-sport stadium back to baseball

The venue changed substantially when the Los Angeles Rams moved to Anaheim for the 1980 football season. Additional seating enclosed the stadium, creating a multi-sport ground around the original baseball setting. After the Rams departed for St. Louis, another major project reversed that direction. The late-1990s renovation returned the building to a baseball-only role, with a different relationship between the seating bowl and the outfield beyond it.

Opening the outfield was one of the project’s central changes, restoring views outside the stadium rather than retaining the earlier enclosure. Garden-plaza entrances, a youth seating area and renovated suites formed other parts of the work. Club restaurants combined indoor and outdoor seating, introducing different spaces around the baseball bowl. These changes explain how the stadium’s later appearance developed from the same underlying ground that had previously accommodated professional football.

The California Spectacular and a wider event history

The California Spectacular became a particularly recognisable element of the redesign. Disney’s sculptural feature brings together a rock formation, cascading water and fountains behind the outfield. Its appearance gives the ballpark a visual connection with Anaheim’s wider entertainment history, rather than presenting the field as an isolated sporting space. The tourism board identifies it among the features associated with the modern Big A.

Although baseball is central to the stadium’s identity, its event history also includes professional football, soccer and concerts. That combination reflects a venue whose role has changed repeatedly while remaining an Anaheim gathering place.
