AT&T Stadium events in a building shaped by Cowboys heritage

Arlington took on the project after officials in Dallas rebuffed owner Jerry Jones's plans to build there. On Nov. 2, 2004, Arlington voters approved a public-private partnership with the Cowboys for a retractable-roof stadium. Construction began in April 2006. The venue opened as Cowboys Stadium on May 27, 2009, and took its current name on July 25, 2013.

Founded in 1960 and nicknamed "America's Team", the Cowboys previously played at Texas Stadium in nearby Irving, which was imploded in April 2010. The new building carried over the old home's touchstones: the Ring of Honor, the Tom Landry statue and the famous hole in the roof. When the roof is open, the gap matches the Texas Stadium outline exactly, down to its rounded corners.

Arches, roof and glass walls

The stadium was designed by Dallas-based HKS, which was also architect of record for the Ballpark in Arlington when it opened in 1994. HKS took on the stadium after the Jones family asked for something as bold and iconic as the team. Two monumental arches rise 292 feet above the field to carry the roof. Each boxed arch is 17 feet wide and 35 feet deep and spans 1,290 feet, close to a quarter mile.

Two bi-parting roof panels move on a rack-and-pinion drive to reveal an opening 256 feet wide and 410 feet long. At each end zone, a five-leaf clear glass retractable door stands 120 feet high and 180 feet wide. The design also includes a distinctive canted glass wall.

Beneath the arches is a column-free room roughly a quarter mile long, big enough for the Statue of Liberty to stand inside. HKS calls the stadium the blueprint for later NFL stadiums, and the firm went on to design SoFi Stadium.

Field-level boxes and the giant video board

HKS placed luxury boxes at field level, giving those areas a different position from the tiered seating around the bowl. Above the playing field hangs the centre-hung HD video board. At the time, its Mitsubishi screen was the largest LED videoboard in the world, and HKS credits it with transforming the fan experience.

Championship football and the Final Four

The stadium also hosts events beyond Cowboys games. It held Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011, which was the first Super Bowl in the region. It staged the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four in April 2014. On January 12, 2015, it hosted the first College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Getting to One AT&T Way

The stadium stands at One AT&T Way, Arlington, TX 76011, in the heart of the city's entertainment district. By day, the arches' metallic surface reflects sunlight and forms a striking silhouette on the Arlington landscape.
