Bath Forum events in an Art Deco landmark

The Forum opened in 1934 as the last super cinema of its kind to be built. Avon Cinemas Company built what was probably the most luxurious cinema in Bath, and the Marquis of Bath opened it.

It flourished as a cinema for three decades before television thinned audiences, then housed a bingo hall and a dancing school. Bath Christian Trust bought the building in 1988 as the home of what is now Life Church Bath, and Bath Forum Ltd later took on developing it as a music venue and theatre for the city.

Architecture and heritage

Architect A.S. Gray, a classically trained 28-year-old, designed the building in a flamboyant Art Deco style. Its pillared façade and canopied entrance hint at the treasures inside. Its Grade II* listing protected those features while many similar buildings were bulldozed, and it is now one of only a handful left in the UK.

A refurbishment improved the heating, lighting and acoustics, and the stage was later renovated and extended. The auditorium is acoustically excellent for orchestral and choral concerts.

Stalls, circle and standing shows

The Forum is generally an allocated seating venue, with theatre-style seats across the stalls and circle. When a show is sold as general admission, those seats stay in place: a standing pit opens directly in front of the stage, with graded seating behind.

Some acts encourage dancing at seats, at the front of the stalls or in the aisles, so others around you, including the seat in front, may stand.

A lift in reception serves the Lower Foyer and Stalls, and a second reaches the Upper Foyer and Ballroom bars. Reflecting its 1930s heritage, the Circle is reached only by stairs and is unsuitable for wheelchair users.

Other spaces and getting there

The coffee house bar has regularly hosted EP launches and intimate live music, while for awards nights and dinner dances the stage can extend over the original fixed seating.

The Forum is at 1a Forum Buildings, St James Parade, Bath, BA1 1UG, in the heart of the city. Browse more concerts across our listings.
