BJCC Concert Hall events and its opening chapter

The Concert Hall opened in October 1974 as part of Birmingham’s civic-centre development. Its origins followed an architectural competition organised by the American Institute of Architects in 1966. George W. Qualls of Philadelphia practice Geddes, Brecher, Qualls and Cunningham won the design commission the following year, linking the Birmingham project with a wider competition to shape a new public complex.

A preview in August 1974 allowed the Concert Hall team to test stage production and other preparations before the formal opening. The Concert Hall and neighbouring Theatre then opened together on October 3, with celebratory events continuing across both venues. The opening programme included Birmingham’s ballet, civic chorus and symphony orchestra, along with a dedication of the Schlicker pipe organ. Those local organisations placed the hall within the city’s performing-arts life from its first season.

Continental, Orchestra, Grand Tier and Balcony

The Concert Hall’s seating diagram begins with a Continental section nearest the stage. Behind it, the Orchestra is divided into left, centre and right blocks. The Grand Tier carries the same three-part arrangement, and the Balcony is also separated into left, centre and right areas. These named sections describe a hall organised around a stage, with several distinct groups of seats facing the performance.

Row lettering varies between the sections. The Continental area uses paired letters, the main Orchestra uses single letters, and the Grand Tier returns to paired lettering. The Balcony has its own single-letter rows. The chart also separates the blocks by seat-number groups, so a row letter can occur in more than one part of the hall. The complete section name therefore remains a meaningful part of a Concert Hall seat’s identity.

Broadway and touring performances in Birmingham

The Concert Hall is the home of Broadway in Birmingham, bringing touring Broadway productions to the city. Its wider programme includes national concert tours and family entertainment. This gives the room a performance role within the broader Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, alongside the campus’s other event spaces.

The neighbouring BJCC Theatre is a separate venue with a smaller-scale programme. Concert Hall listings refer to the larger stage-facing auditorium and its named seating sections, preserving the distinction between the two rooms that opened during the same civic-centre celebrations.
