A New Arena Under a 1962 Roof

Climate Pledge Arena began life as the Washington State Pavilion at the Century 21 Exposition, the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Renovated and renamed the Seattle Center Coliseum in 1964, it later became KeyArena, longtime home of the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics until their 2008 move to Oklahoma City.

The first sporting event under the roof was a September 30, 1964 exhibition in which the Toronto Maple Leafs, three-time defending Stanley Cup champions, beat the Western Hockey League's Seattle Totems 7-1.

Architecture and Redevelopment

Architect Paul Thiry shaped the pointed roof after a Native cedar-woven rain hat, and as a landmark it could not be destroyed. After groundbreaking on December 5, 2018, crews held the 44-million-pound roof aloft on 72 temporary steel columns while digging out a new subterranean arena, with the ice 53 feet below ground. Designed by Populous and operated by Oak View Group, the finished building rests the roof on its original 20 Y-columns and four buttresses.

The restored glass curtain walls let you circle the building without losing sight of the interior, which Populous calls a North American first. With back-of-house facilities underground, a 360-degree pedestrian park surrounds the site.

The name comes from Amazon's naming-rights partnership tied to The Climate Pledge, which asks signatories to reach net zero carbon by 2040. Populous describes it as the world's first arena to achieve Zero Carbon certification from the International Living Future Institute, and rainwater harvested from the roof is turned into ice.

Home Teams and Climate Pledge Arena Events

The arena opened on October 19, 2021 with a Foo Fighters and Death Cab for Cutie charity benefit, and its first sporting event followed on October 23: the Seattle Kraken's inaugural home opener against the Vancouver Canucks. It is home to the NHL's Kraken, the WNBA's Seattle Storm and the PWHL's Seattle Torrent.

Concerts were central to Oak View Group's pitch, which argued the region lacked a state-of-the-art music venue. The acoustics rely on more than 5,000 lapendary wall panels, specialised 40-foot curtains and networked amplification platforms, and the building has also hosted WWE wrestling, UFC and live comedy.

Seating Areas and Premium Spaces

Hockey, basketball and end-stage concerts each use a different configuration.

• Tunnel Club suites sit at event level.
• Pitchbook Suites run along the sidelines, cantilevered over the seating bowl.
• Opera boxes of four seats connect to the all-inclusive Moët & Chandon Impérial Lounge.
• Symetra Club and WaFd Bank Club are private premium clubs serving local craft beer.
• Space Needle Lounge offers general seating with views of the Space Needle.

Overhead hang the world's first dual suspended scoreboards in a professional arena, placed after sightline analysis.

Getting There

The arena stands at 305 Harrison Street on the 74-acre Seattle Center campus, at the base of the Space Needle. Protected bike lanes surround the building, and the official Arena Guide covers transportation and accessibility.
