Dickies Arena events and rodeo heritage

Dickies Arena opened in autumn 2019 as the new home of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, taking over from the Will Rogers Coliseum. An HKS team member called it "a rodeo arena designed like an opera house." Since opening it has also staged concerts, family shows, boxing, gymnastics and wrestling, and it was chosen to host first- and second-round games of the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. It was built through a public-private partnership between the city and private donors led by philanthropist Ed Bass.

Art Deco architecture and an award-winning roof

Washington, D.C.-based David M. Schwarz Architects designed the arena with Fort Worth firm Hahnfeld Hoffer Stanford, while Dallas-based HKS served as architect of record. Its Art Deco styling pays homage to the neighbouring WPA-era Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum, built in 1936. Inside, wildflowers are etched into designs and native prairie grasses are sculpted in metal, alongside grand staircases, embellished railings and star-shaped chandeliers.

Its roof design creates a column-free interior and earned Dickies Arena a 2021 IDEAS² Award, the steel industry's top design honour. The roof deck also carries sound-absorbing insulation to cut reverberation during concerts.

Western murals at the main entrances

Funded by a gift from the Alice L. Walton Foundation, the arena's public art includes two glass tile mosaic murals over its main entrances, celebrating Fort Worth and Texas heritage. Above the south entrance, "Los Caballos" by Denver-based artist William Matthews commemorates the horse, first brought by the Spanish. A Texas star sits at its centre, framed by oil wells recalling the state's 20th-century oil booms, bluebonnets, longhorns and prickly pear cacti. The three-panel mural over the north entrance was created by Brooklyn-based EverGreene Architectural Arts.

How Dickies Arena seating areas differ

HKS helped design a seating bowl intended to keep the close, traditional feel rodeo fans value. Each event has its own seating chart, so check whether floor seating is included. The main levels are:

• Plaza Level: 100-level sections such as 114 and 129, plus the Reliant Club
• Club Level: loge boxes and the North and South clubs
• Gallery Level: 200-level sections such as 213 and 229
• Rodeo Box Level: odd- and even-numbered boxes

Founders suites, club suites and loge boxes give access to the North Club's fine dining and high-end bar.

Simmons Bank Plaza and the warm-up arena

Outside, the brick-lined Simmons Bank Plaza is designed for outdoor concerts and festivals. Beneath the plaza sits an underground warm-up arena, roofed by a lattice of trusses that forms a glass-walled pavilion where visitors can watch rodeo competitors get ready.

Getting to Dickies Arena

The arena stands at 1911 Montgomery Street beside the Will Rogers Memorial Complex in Fort Worth's Cultural District. The Chevrolet Garage, reached from Montgomery Street, links to the plaza by pedestrian bridge.
