Dreamland Margate events by the sea

Dreamland combines a live-music destination with a historic amusement park on Margate's seafront. Its entertainment roots reach back to the Hall by the Sea, run by showman George Sanger during the nineteenth century. John Henry Iles later transformed the site, introducing the Dreamland name and Scenic Railway in 1920.

Live music has a long place in that history. The Rolling Stones played here in 1963, decades before the site's revival brought outdoor concerts and indoor shows into its modern programme. Past performers in the newer era have included Queens of the Stone Age, Primal Scream, Happy Mondays and Tom Jones.

Four different performance settings

The event spaces have distinct layouts and characters:

• Scenic Stage: the outdoor concert area, with general admission in front of the stage and a raised area towards the rear. Its accessible platform is reached by a gentle slope from the main audience area.
• Hall By The Sea: the largest indoor venue, with a warehouse-style interior. Music events use a standing layout; other productions can use seated arrangements.
• Ballroom: an intimate indoor space on the ground floor, with step-free access and standing audiences for music performances.
• Roller Room: a retro interior retaining its original Art Deco ceiling, also associated with Dreamland's roller disco.

The mix lets Dreamland host a large open-air show and a more compact indoor performance in very different surroundings. For other music destinations, explore concerts on TixChoice.

The Scenic Railway and restored heritage

The wooden Scenic Railway is one of Dreamland's defining landmarks. First opened in 1920, it uses a travelling brakeman to control the train's speed. The structure has Grade II* listed status and became a central part of the campaign to preserve the site.

The park reopened in June 2015 after restoration, with further landscaping and investment in 2017. The Dreamland Heritage Trust works to preserve the historic rides, archives and other surviving features, including the listed cinema complex and former menagerie cages.

Arriving in Margate

Dreamland's address is Marine Terrace, CT9 1XJ. The park entrance is beside the old cinema building on Hall By The Sea Road. Margate railway station is a short walk away, with Southeastern services linking the town with London St Pancras and London Victoria.

The seafront position places the venue within Margate's wider visitor area, combining its amusement-park history with the town's coastal setting.
