Hertz Arena events and its hockey roots
Hertz Arena opened in 1998 alongside the Florida Everblades, giving professional ice hockey a home in Estero. The team competes in the ECHL, and the arena remains the centre of its home-game programme. Craig Brush founded the club and sports complex with Peter Karmanos and Thomas Thewes.
The Everblades' history includes Kelly Cup victories in 2012, 2022, 2023 and 2024. That sequence includes three consecutive championships, making the team's recent history an important part of the building's identity. The arena has also welcomed NHL activity, including the Southeast Rookie Showcase organised by the Florida Panthers in 2023.
From Everblades Arena to Hertz Arena
The building originally opened as Everblades Arena and was later known as Germain Arena. Hertz announced its naming agreement in 2018, linking the venue with the car-rental business headquartered in Estero. The change introduced the Hertz name and branding throughout the building.
The venue's purpose has remained broader than its hockey calendar. Alongside concerts and touring productions, its sporting history includes NHL and NBA games, indoor football and professional wrestling. Different types of event use the same main arena as the Everblades' home ice.
The main bowl and surrounding spaces
The complex contains three ice sheets: the main arena surface and two adjoining recreational rinks. The additional rinks make it a wider ice-sports destination rather than a single event auditorium. They sit alongside the main venue, which houses its public performances and professional hockey games.
Breakaway Sports Pub overlooks the main seating bowl. Luxury suites form another part of the arena's layout, while the hockey club lists the Hertz #1 Club among its hospitality spaces. These named areas offer a different setting from the regular bowl seats.
Concerts, comedy and family entertainment
The arena's past concert performers include Elton John, Cher, Sting, Bad Bunny and Guns N' Roses. Its wider entertainment record includes Cirque du Soleil, Disney On Ice, the Harlem Globetrotters and stand-up comedy. The mix gives the venue a programme extending well beyond the winter hockey season.
