KOKO tickets in Camden
KOKO is a live music and events venue at 1a Camden High Street, in the heart of Camden. Its programme mixes live shows with late-night club nights, including the venue's own KOKO Electronic events, launched in 2022. It was named Venue of the Year at the 2023 LIVE Awards.
A theatre with many lives
The Grade II-listed building opened in 1901 as the Camden Theatre, a variety theatre launched by the actress Ellen Terry. Renamed the Camden Hippodrome in 1909, it hosted Charlie Chaplin. From 1945 the BBC used it as its first broadcasting studio, and The Goon Show was recorded here for ten years.
As The Music Machine from 1977, it was a punk and new wave haunt for Adam Ant, The Clash and the Sex Pistols. It became Camden Palace in 1982 and was relaunched as KOKO in 2004.
Historical performances
- The Rolling Stones in 1964, performing and recording their 'Cops and Robbers' EP live for the first time
- Madonna's first UK show in 1983, then her Confessions on a Dance Floor launch in 2005
- Prince across 1988, 2007 and 2015
- Amy Winehouse in 2004 and 2006
- Raye on her debut UK headline tour in 2018
Standing floor and balconies
KOKO is not a seated venue. Audiences stand across the floor and the balconies, and there are only a small number of benches, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reserved seating is limited to a designated Access area for accessibility ticket holders, with wheelchair, seated and standing access tickets each including a free standing companion ticket and a queue jump.
Restoration and The House of KOKO
KOKO closed in 2019 for a three-year restoration and redevelopment that survived a fire, a flood and the pandemic, reopening in 2022 with Arcade Fire, DJ Luciano and Central Cee. The estate now also includes Cafe KOKO and The House of KOKO, a private members' club behind the theatre whose members have a private balcony for live shows.
