Royal Albert Hall events and history

The Hall grew from the 1851 Great Exhibition. Its Commissioners used most of the profits to buy the Kensington Gore Estate, opposite the exhibition's Hyde Park site. Prince Albert proposed a music hall there but died in 1861. Queen Victoria later backed Sir Henry Cole to build it alongside a memorial to him.

Design and construction

Captain Francis Fowke drew the designs. After his death in December 1865, Colonel Henry Scott of the Royal Engineers completed them. Construction was funded partly by investors buying seats, and Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales were among the first buyers. Mrs Henry Cole laid the first brick on 7 November 1867, and the Queen observed an acoustic test on 3 December 1870.

At the opening on 29 March 1871, Queen Victoria was too moved by the realisation of her husband's vision to speak. The founding aim was to be the "finest in Europe for seeing, hearing and convenience". The building is now Grade I listed.

How the auditorium was first used

Weeks after the opening, members of the Working Men's Club and Institute Union toured the building. They were seated in the gallery for a lecture on its construction. A small platform at one end was backed by screens showing sections and diagrams. Speakers acknowledged the defective acoustics and pointed to Scott's new velarium, which had not yet been installed.

That summer, the London International Exhibition of 1871 drew exhibitors from 35 nations and British colonies. A daily lecture ran in the Arena. Architecture, engravings, photography and watercolours hung in the picture gallery at the top of the main auditorium. Educational objects filled the East Theatre and West Theatre, which are today the Coda restaurant and the Elgar Room. The plan was for annual exhibitions, but they ran only from 1871 to 1874.

Music, sport and speeches

The concert platform carries real musical weight. Wagner, Verdi and Elgar each conducted the first UK performance of their own works here, and Rachmaninov played his own compositions. Historical rock and pop appearances include Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Adele.

The Hall hosted 25 suffrage meetings and many patriotic rallies in support of the armed forces. Emmeline Pankhurst, Sir Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela are among the figures who have appeared in its auditorium. It describes itself as the world's village hall.

Recurring traditions

Annual events associated with the Hall include the Henry Wood Promenade concerts each summer and the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance. The archive also holds records of the Queen's Hall, the former home of the Proms and of Sir Henry Wood. For more live music, browse concerts on TixChoice.

Getting there

The Hall stands on Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AP, in South Kensington. It faces the Hyde Park site of the 1851 Great Exhibition. The 1871 exhibition also used the Royal Horticultural Society gardens to the Hall's south.
