London Stadium events: football, athletics and concerts
London Stadium was built for the London 2012 Olympic Games and later became West Ham United's home. The club played its first Premier League match here in August 2016, beating Bournemouth. Football brought a new regular audience to a venue already closely associated with athletics.
That sporting range continues to shape the stadium. It hosted the London 2017 World Athletics Championships and the first Major League Baseball games staged in Europe. Rugby and motorsport have also formed part of its event history. Concert performances have included the Rolling Stones, Muse and Foo Fighters, alongside its football programme.
The stands and the changing lower tier
Four principal stands surround the bowl. Their names connect the stadium with different generations of West Ham history:
- Billy Bonds Stand: the east side, renamed in March 2019 after the club's record appearance-maker and two-time FA Cup-winning captain.
- Bobby Moore Stand: the north end, honouring West Ham's World Cup-winning captain.
- Sir Trevor Brooking Stand: the south end, carrying another of the club's celebrated players' names.
- West Stand: the opposite long side from the Billy Bonds Stand.
The lower tier is reconfigurable, allowing the stadium to change between football, athletics and large entertainment productions. A completed seating project in August 2020 squared off the lower stands behind the goals and brought those seats nearer the pitch. This is a different arrangement from the stadium's original Olympic layout.
West Ham's access statement identifies accessible viewing areas across all four stands, including raised positions behind the lower tier and in corner areas. The club's published stadium map shows the stand names alongside blocks and the bridges leading onto the stadium island.
West Ham heritage around the ground
The move preserved several links with the Boleyn Ground. The John Lyall gates were transferred to the stadium store, while the European Champions statue honours Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. These give the newer ground visible connections with the club's earlier home and its European history.

Arriving through Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
The venue recommends Stratford as its main transport gateway. Walking routes from the station lead through the Olympic Park towards the stadium's bridges. The stadium also lists Stratford International, Pudding Mill Lane and Hackney Wick among nearby stations, providing alternative approaches to the park.
