Lucas Oil Stadium Indianapolis Tickets

Lucas Oil Stadium tickets and the venue's story

Lucas Oil Stadium opened in 2008 and is operated by the Capital Improvement Board. Lucas Oil Products secured the naming rights from the Indianapolis Colts in 2006.

Since opening, it has staged Colts home games, a Super Bowl, the NFL Draft Combine, NCAA Men's Final Fours, major concerts and conventions. Sports Business Journal named it Sports Facility of the Year in 2009.

Architecture and the retractable roof

HKS Architects drew on the city's and state's heritage to give the building a turn-of-the-century look. Its brick, steel and glass structure echoes the traditional forms of Indiana's collegiate and high school basketball arenas and college football stadiums.

The roof was the first of its kind. Two panels run on five rails and part in roughly nine to eleven minutes, opening a space centred over the playing field.

At the north end, an operable window, described as a first in the NFL, frames the Indianapolis skyline. The designers angled the building towards the radial city centre, and the Bud Light Terrace looks out over the city through it.

How the seating bowl changes

The seven-level stadium sets its field below street level. Seating mixes general spectator areas, club seats with access to Club Lounges, and suites ranging from Mini to Super Suites.

Much of the bowl moves:

• East and west sidelines retract. They extend fully for football, partly to Row 7 for soccer, or pull back for trade shows needing maximum floor space.
• North End Zone seating retracts and can be removed, turning the north end into extra exhibit space alongside the convention centre.
• Basketball and in-the-round events use an expanded layout. With extra locker rooms, this has made the stadium a prime Final Four venue.

The floor shape and seating layout at a football game differ from those at a concert or basketball tournament.

Getting there

The stadium stands in downtown Indianapolis, across the railroad tracks from the Indiana Convention Center. That six-block convention district is bordered by the State Capitol, Union Station, Pan American Plaza, Circle Centre and Victory Field.
