Sheffield City Hall events and its historic setting

Sheffield City Hall has presented live entertainment since 1932. Its programme spans orchestral music, touring concerts, comedy and local events, with the Sheffield International Concert Season forming a longstanding part of the venue's musical identity.

The building overlooks Barker's Pool in the city centre. Designed by E. Vincent Harris, it is listed at Grade II*. Its Classical Revival exterior has a monumental entrance portico with Corinthian columns, giving the venue a recognisable public face before visitors reach the auditoriums inside.

Three distinct performance spaces

City Hall contains several halls rather than one interchangeable concert room. The main spaces have different shapes and seating arrangements:

• Oval Hall: the principal auditorium, with stalls, circle and balcony seating. Horseshoe-shaped balcony tiers wrap around the hall beneath a shallow, decorated domed ceiling and an oval rooflight.
• Memorial Hall: a smaller, half-moon-shaped theatre with its own balcony. Its scale makes it a contrasting setting for intimate gigs, comedy and spoken events.
• Ballroom: an Art Deco space that can accommodate standing audiences, cabaret and seated theatre layouts. The open floor gives it a different feel from the fixed tiers of the Oval Hall.

The building's entrance hall also forms part of its architectural interest. Decorative saucer domes and a vaulted gallery connect the public spaces with the same civic ambition visible outside. Different entrances and foyers serve the Oval Hall, Memorial Hall and Ballroom.

Classical music and comedy at City Hall

The Sheffield International Concert Season uses the Oval Hall, bringing orchestras and soloists into the main auditorium. The venue's City Bar provides a gathering space before performances.

The Memorial Hall is also the home of the Last Laugh Comedy Club. Its programme combines a compere with visiting comedians, using the smaller hall's setting for a different kind of night from a full orchestral concert. For music at other destinations, explore concerts on TixChoice.

Access and travel

A ramp leads to the main entrance, and lifts connect the building's floors; the Memorial Hall balcony is the exception to lift access. Step-free accessible seating is available at stalls level, and hearing loops are provided in the auditoriums.

The City Hall tram stop serves the Blue and Yellow routes behind the building. Sheffield railway station provides a city-centre rail connection, while the venue's address is Barker's Pool, off Holly Street.
