State Farm Arena events

State Farm Arena in downtown Atlanta is home to the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. Since its renovation it has hosted NBA games, major concerts and NCAA tournaments, and the way the building was rebuilt explains why different areas offer such different experiences.

From Philips Arena to State Farm Arena

Construction began on June 5, 1997, and the arena opened as Philips Arena on September 18, 1999. The Hawks and the City of Atlanta later partnered on a 2017-2018 transformation led by architect HOK, described by the arena as the second-largest renovation in NBA history.

The State Farm Arena name was adopted on August 29, 2018, under a 20-year partnership between the Hawks and the insurer. The reworked building celebrated its grand opening with the Hawks' first regular-season home game on October 24, 2018.

Opening up the west side

The defining change came on the arena's west side. Four levels of suites and offices there had blocked a continuous loop around the building, and columns obstructed views of the bowl. HOK knocked out that suite wall and removed the columns, creating 360-degree concourses with bars and drink rails overlooking the bowl. A truss spanning 173 feet and supporting a 1 million-pound roof load was built and installed in eight weeks.

The open concourses were inspired by the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile loop of trails and parks connecting city neighborhoods, and link social spaces and vantage points so fans can explore throughout a visit.

Seating areas and premium spaces

The former suite wall was repurposed as viewing terraces, multilevel connection points and premium spaces, so the area you choose shapes the event:

• Courtside: home to the NBA's first courtside bar.
• Veranda Suites: placed where traditional suites once sat, with doorways connecting them to other suites and the bowl.
• Loft Suites: part of the repurposed west-side wall.
• Atlanta Social: an 18,000-sq-ft suite experience furnished with movable sofas and club chairs rather than fixed seats.
• Topgolf Swing Suites: suites complete with golf simulators.

Clubs include the Delta SKY360° Club and the Concert Club, while Killer Mike's S.W.A.G. Shop is a barbershop overlooking the court. Overhead, the 360-degree center-hung board offers 4,477 square feet of video display.

Food and sustainability

Concession kitchens were designed to run like restaurants with an emphasis on local cuisine, and a chef's club has featured a rotating lineup of regional chefs. Forbes Travel named State Farm the NBA's tastiest arena.

In 2009, as Philips Arena, the building became the first NBA arena awarded LEED certification for existing building operations and maintenance. It later became the world's first sports and live entertainment venue to earn TRUE platinum zero-waste certification. FULL COURT PRESS, a Hawks logo sculpture of upcycled aluminum cups and cans, stands at the Terrace level by the Gate 2 entrance.
