T-Mobile Center events in downtown Kansas City

T-Mobile Center opened in autumn 2007 as Sprint Center. It has since staged concerts, family shows, athletics and collegiate basketball tournaments, including men's and women's Big 12 basketball events. Populous describes the brief as an arena that would re-energise the Kansas City urban experience.

A glass arena designed by local firms

The building was designed by the Downtown Arena Design Team, a collaboration of Kansas City-based firms. The team included Populous, Ellerbe Becket, 360 Architecture and Rafael Architects. Populous acted as Architect of Record for the four-firm group.

The arena's defining feature is a 360-degree glass facade made from 2,204 panes of clear, patterned glass. The designers made the exterior deliberately transparent, allowing views into and out of the arena, so passers-by catch glimpses of the activity inside. The glass catches and reflects light by day and by night, creating an ever-changing surface around the building.

Built through a city partnership

The arena was developed through a public-private partnership between the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). In August 2004, Kansas City voters approved a ballot initiative to fund much of the construction, and AEG contributed the remainder. Ground was broken in June 2005, and the arena was completed in autumn 2007 on a downtown site of about eight and a half acres.

One floor, many configurations

The internal layout changes with the type of event, so a concert seating plan differs from a basketball or hockey setup. Before the arena opened, more than 20,000 visitors attended a free open house. They watched the floor change from hockey to basketball to concert configurations.

Landmark nights in arena history

• The doors opened on 10 October 2007 after a ribbon-cutting ceremony with city dignitaries and Garth Brooks.
• Elton John played the first concert on 13 October 2007.
• Garth Brooks gave nine performances in the arena's first ten years, the most by any artist.
• George Strait set the first-decade concert attendance record in January 2014.
• The 2013 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship drew the largest basketball crowd of that decade.
