An Islanders Home on Long Island

For years the New York Islanders moved from one venue to the next. UBS Arena finally gave the club a permanent Long Island home of its own. Ground was broken at Belmont Park on 23 September 2019, and players, alumni, fans and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman were among those at the ceremony. It became the first arena the Islanders held an ownership stake in since entering the league in 1972.

Doors opened on 20 November 2021 for a home opener against the Calgary Flames. Behind the project was New York Arena Partners, an ownership group formed by the Islanders, Oak View Group and Sterling Project Development.

Belmont Park Heritage and Architecture

The arena sits within Belmont Park, which has drawn visitors for entertainment for more than a century. Its design draws on the park's history and on New York landmarks including Central Park, Ebbets Field, Grand Central Terminal, the Park Avenue Armory and the Prospect Park Boathouse. Mature legacy trees were retained, so fans approach through a grove before reaching the Great Hall. Former Islanders captain Pat Flatley praised how the exterior respects the history of the racetrack site.

Populous was architect of record. It shaped the layout, the seating bowl and the placement of suites and clubs. JRDV Urban Architecture designed the exterior. Inside, the concourses use white subway tile, wood paneling and theatrical lighting, and Belmont Hall is an Islanders-inspired sports bar.

The venue also reports achieving carbon neutrality for operations in fall 2022. It received LEED Green Building Certification in January 2023 and Zero Waste TRUE Silver certification in May 2024.

Choosing Seats at UBS Arena Events

For hockey, the seating bowl sits close to the ice, and the venue describes it as loud and intimate. The arena also has what it calls the largest arena scoreboard in New York State, with two levels of high-resolution LED ribbon boards.

Areas that change the experience include:

• Supporters standing section: Billed as the NHL's first, it honors the famous Section 329, which was originally located at Nassau Coliseum.
• Bars facing the ice: Several bars open directly into the bowl, so fans can get a drink without missing play.
• Outdoor terraces: Two terraces are open to every guest.

The arena holds more people for concerts than for hockey, because the building was designed for music as well as built for sport. It has a state-of-the-art sound system, and its back-of-house artist campus was planned with input from Live Nation. Performers since the 2021 opening have included Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.
