Wylam Brewery events at the Palace of Arts
The Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, is home to Wylam Brewery, a 30-barrel microbrewery that shares the listed building with a Brewery Tap and the Grand Hall. The hall hosts live music, weddings and pop-up events.
A survivor of the 1929 exhibition
Exhibition Park takes its name from the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition, which drew more than four million people. Wylam Brewery describes that exhibition as an ambitious project to celebrate and encourage craft, art and industry at the start of the Great Depression.
The Palace of Arts is the only building from the 1929 exhibition still standing. After lying almost derelict for nearly a decade, it sprang back to life as a fully operational working brewery.
Architecture of the Palace of Arts
Newcastle City Council calls the Palace of Arts an impressive art deco building, and it is listed at Grade II. Its design reflects its original role as an exhibition hall for art:
- a steel frame clad in artificial stone, chosen for the security of the valuable works of art it once displayed
- a square pavilion plan behind a colonnaded entrance
- a reinforced concrete roof with a large cast-iron-framed dome
The brewery says aspects of the building make full accessibility difficult. Standard and large print venue plans are available on request.
From a potting shed to the park
Wylam Brewery was founded in 2000. Founders John Boyle and Robin Leighton worked out their first malt bills and recipes in a potting shed in the village of Wylam, Northumberland. Its beers are now enjoyed in pubs and bottle shops across the land and beyond. The council's park guide picks out the brewery for a pint of real ale on a summer evening, and food is served too.
Getting there
Reaching the brewery is, in its own words, quite literally a walk in the park. Exhibition Park has footpaths suitable for prams and wheelchairs, the nearest bus stop is on Great North Road and the nearest car park is Claremont Road. Vehicles cannot drive through the park to the brewery except for pre-booked mobility-impaired access.
