ZOOM Frankfurt events and a new east-side home

ZOOM moved to its present home in 2022, leaving its earlier city-centre setting for the U.F.O. building in Frankfurt’s east. The address is Carl-Benz-Straße in Fechenheim, beyond Ostend. The venue combines live concerts with DJ performances, continuing a musical identity that includes both bands on a stage and nights built around electronic music. Frankfurt’s tourism board records past ZOOM appearances by Selig and Max Giesinger.

The building already had an important place in Frankfurt club culture. It housed Sven Väth’s Cocoon Club until 2012, and the conversion preserved some of its defining interior features. The membrane wall and individual cocoons remained part of the setting, giving the new venue a physical connection with the earlier club rather than relying only on its history or name.

The membrane wall and Cocoon design

For the original Cocoon project, completed in 2004, designers 3deluxe developed the interior together with graphics and moving imagery. The main club space had a triangular form surrounded by a perforated, layered membrane wall. Capsule-like rooms passed through that wall, allowing visual contact between the active centre and quieter surrounding areas. The original arrangement combined architecture with the projected images that formed part of the DJ presentation.

The wall also involved specialist structural and material work. Engineering firm osd collaborated with 3deluxe and manufacturer Villa Rocca on self-compacting Flow-Stone concrete elements. A small group of basic modules could be rotated and offset to create a varied organic surface. That method explains why the preserved wall looks more like a continuous sculptural interior than a conventional flat room divider.

ZOOM’s different event spaces

The present venue was extensively redesigned for its new role. Its main areas are the Saal, Kantine and Bar, which can operate individually or in combination. That flexible arrangement supports concerts and cultural events as well as corporate functions, with separate backstage space forming part of the building. The room names describe different parts of the same venue rather than separate Frankfurt addresses.

The combination of adaptable rooms and retained Cocoon features gives ZOOM its particular character: a concert and club venue within a building whose interior already carried a history of electronic music and experimental design.
