Arizona Cardinals tickets and the franchise’s long journey
The Cardinals trace their beginnings to the Morgan Athletic Club, formed by Chris O’Brien in Chicago in 1898. Their name came from used University of Chicago jerseys: O’Brien described the faded maroon as cardinal red. The team became the Racine Street Cardinals before its later Chicago, St. Louis and Arizona identities.
The Cardinals were a charter member of the American Professional Football Association in 1920, the organisation that became the NFL. Their earliest league championship came in 1925. Another followed in 1947, when coach Jimmy Conzelman’s side defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. Charley Trippi was part of that championship team’s celebrated backfield.
From Chicago to the desert
The franchise left Chicago for St. Louis in 1960. During that period it won consecutive NFC East division championships in 1974 and 1975. A second relocation brought the team to Arizona in 1988, where its first home was Sun Devil Stadium.
Initially known as the Phoenix Cardinals, the club adopted the Arizona Cardinals name in March 1994. The changing names reflect the different cities and regions represented by a single long-running organisation. The franchise’s history therefore reaches much further back than its years playing in the desert.
The Arizona era produced an NFC championship in the 2008 season and an appearance in Super Bowl XLIII. That achievement followed the move into a new stadium in 2006, giving the club a purpose-built home after its Sun Devil Stadium years.
State Farm Stadium’s distinctive design
State Farm Stadium was designed by Peter Eisenman with HOK Sport and Hunt Construction. The building combines a retractable roof with a natural-grass playing field that can be rolled outside. These are separate engineering systems: the roof changes the enclosure above spectators, while the field tray lets the grass receive sunlight outside the building.
The movable pitch also leaves the stadium floor available for other event layouts. The operator describes a single tray running on steel wheels and tracks, carrying the grass surface between its outdoor position and the interior. It is one of the features that makes the Cardinals’ ground different from a conventional fixed-field football stadium.
A roof shaped for the Arizona climate
The roof uses two retractable panels. Its original design allowed the building to remain closed in hot weather, with an air-conditioned interior, or to open in cooler conditions. The panels travel along an arched path rather than a simple flat line, an unusual element of the stadium’s roof structure.
Outside, metal panels reflect the changing desert light. Vertical glazed openings interrupt the exterior, adding another recognisable feature to Eisenman’s design. The stadium also hosts the Fiesta Bowl and other sports, so the same building supports a wider programme beyond Cardinals home games.
