Atlanta Falcons tickets and the club’s beginnings

Atlanta received its NFL franchise on June 30, 1965. The league awarded the team to insurance executive Rankin M. Smith, ending the city's campaign for professional football. A competition then supplied the Falcons name. Although several people proposed it, a schoolteacher from Griffin, Georgia, was chosen as the winner. The new identity gave Atlanta's team the bird of prey that still defines its name.

From Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to the Georgia Dome

The Falcons spent their first stadium era at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, closing that chapter after the 1991 season. They moved into the Georgia Dome the following year. The club's 1980 team had already won the NFC West, led by a group that included quarterback Steve Bartkowski and running back William Andrews. In 1998, Atlanta won the NFC championship and reached Super Bowl XXXIII.

Another NFC title followed after the 2016 season, with NFL MVP Matt Ryan helping take the Falcons to Super Bowl LI. Those two conference championship teams represent major chapters in the club's history, across different stadium eras and generations of Atlanta supporters.

Falcons heritage and familiar opponents

The club's archive celebrates figures including Tommy Nobis, Claude Humphrey, Deion Sanders, Billy Johnson and Tony Gonzalez. It also records the 1977 defence known as the Gritz Blitz. Games against New Orleans, Carolina and Tampa Bay occupy their own place in that archive, reflecting the Falcons' NFC South relationships. Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s roof and bowl

Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017 as a home for the Falcons and Atlanta's MLS team. HOK and tvsdesign designed its retractable roof, with Birdair supplying the roof-pillow and façade system. Eight roof petals draw back in a movement resembling a camera aperture. Their ETFE material uses air-inflated layers, while the façade uses a single-layer film supported by a cable-net structure.

The translucent roof and façade were designed to bring natural light into the enclosed building. This combination of a movable roof and lightweight film is one of the stadium's most recognisable architectural features. It gives the Falcons' present home a distinct form from the traditional enclosed dome that preceded it in the team's stadium history.

Inside the present stadium

A continuous Halo Board circles the roof opening above the playing field. The stadium's own venue information describes premium spaces on every level and standing-room gathering areas across all three concourses. The upper display and the concourse spaces are separate parts of the experience, alongside the seating bowl itself.

The building earned LEED Platinum certification in 2017. Its environmental programme includes water conservation, energy efficiency, recycling and composting, alternative transport and urban growing projects. These initiatives form part of the venue's operation as a year-round sports and entertainment building, alongside the NFL games that bring Falcons supporters together.
