A Franchise Born From a Carolinas Bid
Jerry Richardson's idea for an NFL team took shape during a spring 1987 drive down Interstate 85, and he had no intention of accepting no for an answer. At the time, the corner of Mint and Morehead streets in uptown Charlotte was an overgrown field. There were no Panthers players and no black and blue jerseys.
Richardson, a former Baltimore Colts wide receiver turned businessman, met interested parties in Charlotte on July 16, 1987, to weigh a bid. Hall of Famer Mike McCormack later joined the effort as a consultant. An Uptown Charlotte site for a privately financed stadium was chosen in December 1989. On October 26, 1993, NFL owners unanimously named the Carolinas the league's 29th franchise and its first expansion team since 1976. Fireworks burst over downtown Charlotte as fans celebrated.
Carolina Panthers Tickets and the Club's Defining Eras
The Panthers' 7-9 first season set an NFL record for wins by an expansion team. Their second brought a 12-4 record, the NFC Western division title and a place in the NFC championship game.
The 2003 team, two seasons removed from a 1-15 campaign, won the NFC championship and reached Super Bowl XXXVIII. Carolina returned to the Super Bowl in 2015, losing Super Bowl 50 to the Denver Broncos 24-10. In 2025, a sixth NFC South title brought the club's first playoff appearance since 2017.
The Hall of Honor
The Hall of Honor traces that lineage. McCormack entered in 1997 and Sam Mills in 1998. Wesley Walls, Jake Delhomme, Jordan Gross and Steve Smith Sr. followed in 2019. Muhsin Muhammad and Julius Peppers joined in 2023.
Inside Bank of America Stadium
The Panthers' home opened on June 27, 1996, in uptown Charlotte and was designed specifically for football. HOK Sports Facilities Group designed the open-air, natural-grass venue, and F.N. Thompson and Turner Construction built it as a joint venture. It also serves as the team's self-contained headquarters, with training facilities, practice fields and offices.
The facade is the stadium's signature. Massive arches and towers frame the entries, and the cladding echoes the team's black, silver and blue. Exterior paths run beneath archways of live oak trees past botanical garden plantings. A 2014 offseason renovation added new technology while keeping the classic design and stadium-in-the-park feel.
Choosing Where to Sit
- End zones: the first row sits 20 feet from the back of the end zone, closer to the action than the sidelines.
- Sidelines: the first row begins 53 feet from the sideline, with every seat elevated for viewing angles.
- Club level: seats are wider than those in the lower and upper levels.
- Suites: a 2015 refresh, the first in 20 years and shaped by suite holders' feedback, added fully retractable windows. Members-only suite clubs include the Gridiron Club and the 10/26 Club.
Later upgrades brought escalator bays, high-definition video boards above each end zone and ribbon boards circling the club and upper levels.
Beyond the NFL
The stadium hosted Billy Graham's Carolinas Crusade in 1996, the Rolling Stones in 1997 and CONCACAF Gold Cup matches in 2011, 2015 and 2019.
