Bristol City tickets and a club born in Bedminster

Bristol City began in 1894 as Bristol South End, playing at St John's Lane in Bedminster, and took its present name in 1897. Ashton Gate was originally the ground of Bedminster FC, a mile from St John's Lane. The two clubs merged in 1900, and Ashton Gate has been City's home since 1904.

The club rose quickly. Elected to Division Two in 1901, City won the 1905/06 Division Two title and finished Division One runners-up in 1906/07, a club-best league finish. In 1909 they reached the FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Manchester United at Crystal Palace.

City play in red and white and are known as the Robins. The bird returned to the club badge in the 2019/20 season for the first time in 25 years. The club's main rivals are Bristol Rovers, in the Bristol derby, and Cardiff City, in the Severnside derby. The club was reformed in 1982.

Ashton Gate's stands and seating areas

Ashton Gate is home to the men's Championship team. The major redevelopment completed in 2016 added two new stands and refurbished a third. Home fans use four concourses: the Dolman Stand, the South Stand and the Upper and Lower Lansdown. The turnstile printed on a ticket is the one closest to its seat.

Lansdown Stand

The Lansdown Stand on the west side opened in August 2016 and was the largest of those additions. Its two tiers span four levels. The ground floor and level 4 are general admission, while levels 2 and 3 are reserved for hospitality. The club's family area is in the Upper Lansdown.

Dolman Stand

Facing it on the east side, the Dolman Stand opened in 1970 and is named after the popular former chairman Harry Dolman. It was built with an indoor bowling green. Historic England records it as the first stand in Britain with a column-free 'goalpost' roof. Archive photographs from 1994 show wooden seating in its upper tier.

South Stand and Atyeo Stand

The South Stand closes off the south end of the ground, and its concourse links with those of the Lansdown and Dolman stands. Visiting supporters sit in the Atyeo Stand. It opened in 1994 in place of the old away-end terrace. The stand honours John Atyeo, who made a club record 597 League appearances before retiring in 1966.

A stage for more than men's football

Ashton Gate has long been more than a football ground. It staged a rugby union international between England and Wales in 1908 and a full football international between the same nations in 1913. Floodlights were first used there in 1953 for a friendly against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The ground also stages rugby, with Bristol Bears using Ashton Gate alongside the football club. Bristol City Women won the Women's Championship in 2023, adding another chapter to the club's wider sporting history.
