Cleveland Cavaliers tickets and club history
The Cavaliers entered the NBA in 1970, organised by Nick Mileti. Their first home was Cleveland Arena, before a move to the Coliseum in Richfield in 1974. That journey matters to the club’s identity: its history belongs both to downtown Cleveland and to the suburban building where the team first became a playoff contender. The early Cavaliers had to build a following alongside a new roster assembled through expansion and college drafts.
The Miracle of Richfield
The breakthrough came in 1976, when Cleveland earned its first division championship and playoff place. The club’s arena history recalls a decisive seventh-game victory over Washington at Richfield Coliseum, part of the season remembered as the Miracle of Richfield. Another celebrated Coliseum chapter ended very differently: Michael Jordan’s winning shot eliminated Cleveland from the playoffs in 1989. These are defining moments from the years before the Cavaliers returned to a downtown home.
Mark Price and Cleveland’s shooting tradition
Mark Price arrived through a draft-day trade with Dallas in 1986. The point guard spent nine seasons in Cleveland and became a four-time All-Star, helping develop the Cavaliers into contenders. His game was built around unusually accurate shooting: he achieved a season combining at least fifty percent from the field, forty percent from three-point range and ninety percent at the foul line. Price also won the NBA’s three-point contest twice and represented the United States at the 1994 World Championship. The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2012, recognising a career that began at Georgia Tech before his move to Cleveland. His legacy gives Cleveland basketball another major reference point beyond its later championship era.
LeBron James led Cleveland to its first NBA championship in 2016, overcoming Golden State in the Finals.
Watching the Cavaliers at Rocket Arena
Rocket Arena stands in downtown Cleveland and is home to both Cavaliers basketball and Cleveland Monsters hockey. The building has also hosted major college basketball, including the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 2007. A Cavs game therefore takes place in a venue with a wider basketball history of its own, rather than a building used only for the NBA.
The arena’s renovation expanded entrances on the northwest and northeast sides and widened concourses. Its upper concourse became a continuous route around the building. Loudville, at the north end of the upper bowl, was developed as a distinct gathering area for vocal Cavaliers supporters. Elsewhere, suites, clubs and theatre boxes form separate hospitality neighbourhoods, each with its own interior identity. These features explain why the arena experience can differ considerably between its upper-level supporter areas and its hospitality spaces.
