Fenway Park since 1912
Fenway Park has been home to the Boston Red Sox since 1912, after the club spent 1901-11 at the Huntington Avenue Grounds. Its first official game came on April 20, 1912, days after the Titanic sank. The Red Sox won it 7-6 in 11 innings over the New York Highlanders. The name reflected the park's Fenway location and gave the Taylor family's Fenway Realty Company free publicity.
Construction was hurried, so a planned second deck was dropped. The original single-decked grandstand of steel and concrete wrapped the infield and ran down the right-field line. Center field had wooden bleachers, and there were no seats down the left-field line. The main infield grandstand's structure still stands.
Duffy's Cliff to the Green Monster
Left field began with Duffy's Cliff, a steep incline in front of a towering fence. It was named for 1912 left fielder Duffy Lewis. Fire destroyed the left-field-line bleachers in 1926, and they were not replaced. In January 1934 another blaze gutted new seating during owner Tom Yawkey's reconstruction. The remodeled park still opened that April with more than 7,000 new seats, a 37-foot wall carrying baseball's first electronically operated scoreboard, and an extended left-field grandstand.
A 23-foot screen was added above the wall in 1936. Today's 37-foot, 2-inch wall is the Green Monster. Since 2003 the Monster Seats on top have let fans catch many home runs that once fell into a net or onto Lansdowne Street. Look too for Pesky's Pole in right field and a 420-foot triangle in right-center.
Choosing Fenway Park tickets by seating area
Each area of the Fenway Park seating plan offers a different experience:
- Box seats: the lower bowl, line to line, is close to the action thanks to Fenway's lack of foul territory.
- Infield grandstand: wooden seats with strong sightlines and a roof overhead that keeps off rain.
- Monster Seats: perched above the left-field wall, where home-run balls arrive.
- Bleachers: festive and generally younger, with beach balls tapped around. Seats near the bullpen overlook pitchers warming up.
- Sam Deck: a social area on the right-field roof with a bar and picnic tables, where many fans stand.
The organ plays Take Me Out to the Ballgame at the seventh-inning stretch. Fans sing along to Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline in the bottom of the eighth.
Beyond the Red Sox
The Boston Braves played two doubleheaders here in 1913 because Fenway was larger than their South End Grounds. They then won the 1914 World Series at the park. The NHL brought outdoor hockey with the 2010 and 2023 Winter Classics. In 2003 the club first opened the ballpark as event space, and Bruce Springsteen played concerts there that September.
Getting oriented
The ballpark's address is 4 Jersey Street, Boston, MA 02215, and it is visible from the Massachusetts Turnpike. Today's Fenway Park combines three parts: the plot the Taylor family bought in 1911, the 1913 Fenway Garage between Ipswich and Lansdowne Streets, and the Jeano Building at 70 Brookline Avenue, between Gates A and E.
