Wrigley Field Chicago Tickets

Weeghman Park to Wrigley Field

Charles H. Weeghman built this ballpark in 1914 on former seminary grounds for a Federal League club. When that league folded, he bought into the Cubs, a club established in 1876, and moved them from the West Side for the 1916 season. After a spell as Cubs Park, it became Wrigley Field in 1926, named for owner William Wrigley Jr. It is baseball's second-oldest active stadium after Boston's Fenway Park, and it is a National Historic Landmark.

How the ballpark took shape

In 1922–23 workers cut the stadium into three sections. Right field stayed put, while home plate and left field were dragged back toward Clark Street. The original home plate now lies near today's pitcher's mound, which explains the park's distinctive shape. The upper deck followed later that decade. The left-field side came first, so the 1927 park was lopsided.

The 1914 steel frame, roof supports and visitors' clubhouse survive, but concrete work in 1968–71 removed the last 1914 seating. The park's best-known features date from 1937. That year the bleachers and manual scoreboard were built, and ivy was planted on the brick outfield wall. The Clavey family of horticulturalists did the planting, not Bill Veeck as myth has it.

Lights came only in 1988, making Wrigley the last ballpark to install them. The first official night game, on 9 August, was a 6-4 win over the Mets. Between 2014 and 2019 the 1060 Project added videoboards and premium clubs while preserving the park's historic character.

Choosing Wrigley Field tickets by area

The Wrigley Field seating plan groups seats into Club Box, Field Box, Terrace Box, Terrace Reserved and upper-deck categories. Labels such as Infield and Outfield show where along the bowl each category sits. The layouts also identify club and suite spaces, bullpen boxes, and porch and patio areas.

The bleachers, expanded since 1937, are famous for their traditions. Waveland Avenue lies beyond the left-field wall and Sheffield Avenue beyond right field. Depending on the wind off Lake Michigan, home runs can reach both streets. Some buildings outside have bleacher-style rooftop seats, and Glenallen Hill hit a rooftop across Waveland on 11 May 2000.

Friendly Confines moments

Notable moments include:

• Hippo Vaughn and Fred Toney's 1917 "double no-no"
• Sam Jones's 1955 no-hitter
• Babe Ruth's called shot and Kerry Wood's 20 strikeouts

The "W" flag still flies after Cubs wins.
