Ford Field events in downtown Detroit

Ford Field opened in August 2002, bringing the Detroit Lions back to a downtown stadium. Its design incorporated the existing Hudson's warehouse, making the older commercial building part of the new sports and entertainment venue rather than clearing the entire site for construction.

ROSSETTI designed the original stadium and returned for a major renovation in 2017. The warehouse connection remains one of the ground's defining features, linking the enclosed event bowl with Detroit's architectural and industrial history.

The warehouse and the seating bowl

The stadium combines lower and upper seating areas with a club level and several levels of suites. Most of the suites occupy the warehouse side of the building to the south, while additional suites sit on the north side. The arrangement gives the two sides of the stadium different architectural settings around the same playing surface.

The public maps distinguish general seating, club seating and suites. Main and upper concourses serve the bowl, with separate entry routes shown around the building. The warehouse's ground level also accommodates restaurants, concessions and retail spaces, placing active public uses within the historic structure.

The 2017 renewal

The Lions' renovation expanded the range of social and hospitality spaces while renewing the stadium's audiovisual systems. New video boards and an upgraded sound system changed the presentation above and around the field, while clubs, suites and lounge areas received substantial alterations.

The design introduced more varied spaces for watching games and gathering with other visitors, replacing some enclosed suite inventory with more open social settings. The architects also simplified layouts to improve circulation and wayfinding, retaining the building's connection with the surrounding city.

These changes developed the existing stadium rather than creating a replacement ground, preserving the warehouse as a central part of Ford Field's identity.
