Little Caesars Arena Detroit Tickets

Little Caesars Arena events and Detroit's shared sports home

Little Caesars Arena opened in 2017 as the new home of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons. The move brought both teams into the same downtown building, replacing Joe Louis Arena for hockey and the Palace of Auburn Hills for basketball.

The venue also stages concerts and other live entertainment. It forms a central part of The District Detroit, alongside destinations such as Comerica Park, Ford Field and the Fox Theatre, linking sporting venues with the surrounding city streets.

A sunken bowl within a lower-rise exterior

HOK designed the playing surface below street level, reducing the arena's height above ground. The seating bowl has a steep lower tier, placing a large part of the audience around the event floor rather than concentrating seats in distant upper levels.

Outside, lower-rise brick buildings and varied window treatments break up the scale of the arena. This approach gives the street frontage a different character from a single large, blank arena wall, helping the venue sit within its Woodward Avenue surroundings.

The Via: an indoor city street

The Via is a public concourse between the surrounding buildings and the main bowl, covered by a transparent ETFE roof. Natural light enters the space, which connects the arena with shops, offices and other amenities. Its design creates the impression of an indoor street rather than a conventional enclosed corridor.

A metal skin around the bowl can act as a projection surface, while an overhead LED grid adds changing light effects. Historical displays and artwork connect the newer building with Detroit's sporting traditions. The architecture therefore has a different identity on the concourse from the enclosed performance space inside.

Gondola seating and the upper levels

The arena's gondola is a particularly distinctive viewing area, suspended high above the action. The Michigan First West Gondola offers an elevated perspective that differs from regular tiered seats around the bowl.

Street-level and upper concourses are linked by escalators, stairs and elevators near the principal entrances. Public maps also show the Blue Cross Lounge and other club spaces within the wider seating and hospitality layout.

A new chapter for Red Wings hockey

Detroit won its first regular-season game at Little Caesars Arena against Minnesota in October 2017. Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin scored the first two regular-season goals, beginning the arena's own history alongside the Red Wings memories carried forward from Joe Louis Arena.
