Minnesota Vikings tickets and the franchise’s beginnings
Minnesota was awarded an NFL franchise on January 28, 1960, and began play the following year. General manager Bert Rose recommended the Vikings name to reflect the northern Midwest’s Nordic heritage. Norm Van Brocklin became the first head coach, while the club’s first college draft brought in running back Tommy Mason and quarterback Fran Tarkenton.
Tarkenton made an immediate impression in the first regular-season game on September 17, 1961. Coming off the bench, he threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as Minnesota beat Chicago at Metropolitan Stadium. He would later become the first Vikings player elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in 1986.
Bud Grant and the championship teams
Bud Grant arrived from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to lead the Vikings after Van Brocklin’s departure. Beginning in Grant’s second season, Minnesota put together a run of eleven division titles in thirteen years. The team won the NFL championship in 1969 and NFC championships in 1973, 1974 and 1976, making its purple uniforms a familiar sight deep into the postseason.
The Vikings played at Metropolitan Stadium before moving into the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in 1982. The next permanent home followed in 2016, when the franchise began playing at U.S. Bank Stadium. Those moves trace a progression from outdoor football in Bloomington to two very different indoor settings.
A stadium shaped by Minnesota
HKS designed U.S. Bank Stadium with the region’s culture and climate in mind. Its angular form draws on the ice formations of nearby St. Anthony’s Falls and Scandinavian references, including Viking longboats. The building serves football and a wider calendar of concerts, community events and other sports, giving the city a venue that can operate throughout the year.
One of its most distinctive features is the Legacy Gate, made up of five pivoting glass doors. When open, they link the stadium interior with its adjacent urban plaza. The translucent ETFE roof brings natural daylight into the building while sheltering spectators from Minneapolis weather, preserving a visual connection to the sky without an open-air playing environment.
Inside U.S. Bank Stadium
The stadium has a fixed roof rather than a retractable one. Its transparent portion is made from ETFE, a lightweight polymer film used in an air-supported, multi-layer system. This material is part of what gives the interior its bright appearance while the building remains climate controlled.
The stadium’s layout extends across seven levels, including two general-admission concourses with circulation around the full bowl. The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority owns the building, and the Vikings are its principal tenant. It opened on July 22, 2016, adding a new chapter to the club’s home-ground history.
