Chicago Bears History: From Decatur to Chicago
The Bears trace their roots to Decatur, Illinois, and the A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company, which backed the original Decatur Staleys. George Halas arrived in 1920 to coach and play for a roster made up of Staley employees. On 17 September 1920 the club joined the American Professional Football Association, later renamed the National Football League.
In 1921 the company transferred the team to Halas and allowed him to move it to Chicago. The Staleys won the league championship that season, and in 1922 the franchise took the Chicago Bears name. It remains one of only two NFL charter members still in existence.
An Innovative Club and Its Legends
The Bears were among pro football's most innovative early franchises. In 1922 they became the first club to buy a player from another team, acquiring Ed Healey from Rock Island. In 1925 they signed college All-American Red Grange and showcased him before the first huge crowds the professional game had seen.
No club lists more long-time members among Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinees. The names include Grange, Bronko Nagurski, Sid Luckman, Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Bulldog Turner, Danny Fortmann and Halas himself, who died in 1983.
The honours include eight NFL championships and Super Bowl XX. By the 2019 centennial season, the club counted nine world championships and 28 Hall of Famers.
Chicago Bears Tickets at Soldier Field
For their early decades in Chicago the Bears played at Wrigley Field, the Cubs' famous home. They had already won the first professional game at Soldier Field, beating the Chicago Cardinals 10-0 in 1926, but made the lakefront stadium their base in 1971, opening with a 17-15 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
A Memorial Stadium With Golden Age Heritage
Plans began in 1919 for a stadium honouring American soldiers who died in war. It opened on 9 October 1924 as Municipal Grant Park Stadium and was renamed Soldier Field in 1925 at the urging of Chicago's Gold Star Mothers. The structure rests on 10,000 wood piles driven through landfill to bedrock. In the Golden Age of Sports it staged the 1926 Army-Navy dedication game and the 1927 Dempsey-Tunney "long count" rematch. The Chicago Park District owns the stadium.
Rebuilt Seating and a Modern Bowl
A late-1970s reconstruction replaced plank-board seating with chairbacks and armrests and improved sightlines. In 1982 came new concourses, a press box and skyboxes, and in 1988 natural grass replaced artificial turf as more skyboxes rose along the south rim. Demolition began in 2002, and the Bears returned to the renovated stadium on 29 September 2003 against division rival the Green Bay Packers.
Premium areas include the United Club and the Miller Lite Midway Club. The natural grass field sits above a radiant heating system that helps melt snow and keep the ground from freezing. Statues of Halas and Payton, unveiled in 2019, stand outside the south end, and in 2011 Soldier Field became the first NFL stadium to earn LEED-EB certification.
Getting to Soldier Field
Soldier Field sits on the Museum Campus near downtown Chicago. CTA Red, Green and Orange Line trains stop at Roosevelt Station, about three-quarters of a mile away; fans can walk east through Museum Campus or connect on the #146 bus, while the #128 Soldier Field Express runs on Bears game days. Metra's 18th Street Station is a short walk for fans from the South Side.
