Green Bay Packers tickets and a club built by its town

The Packers were organised on 11 August 1919 in the editorial rooms of the old Green Bay Press-Gazette building on Cherry Street. They began as a semipro team under the direction of Earl "Curly" Lambeau. Two days later the paper reported that the Indian Packing Co. would sponsor the side, and it called the team the "Packers" for the first time.

Green Bay joined the American Professional Football Association on 27 August 1921, before that league renamed itself the National Football League. Apart from a brief spell in the 1920s, Green Bay has been the league's smallest city ever since. The Pro Football Hall of Fame ranks the Packers as the third-oldest team in pro football.

Owned by the community

Survival was never assured. A rain-ruined 1922 season left the club deep in debt. Press-Gazette co-owner Andrew Turnbull then led local businesses in creating the nonprofit Green Bay Football Corporation, and the team has been community-owned since 1923.

A second crisis followed in 1931, when bleachers collapsed at City Stadium and an injured fan sued. The case pushed the corporation into receivership in 1933. The franchise was reorganised in 1935 as Green Bay Packers, Inc., which still operates today. It remains the only publicly owned franchise in the 32-team NFL.

Defining eras

Three straight titles, twice

Before the 1929 season the Packers signed Johnny Blood, Cal Hubbard and Mike Michalske, all later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With them, the Packers won NFL titles in 1929, 1930 and 1931. Don Hutson signed in 1935, and the 1936 team won the club's first championship under the playoff system.

Lombardi's Team of the '60s

Vince Lombardi became head coach in 1959. His Packers won titles in 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1967, including Super Bowls I and II. They joined the 1929-31 team as the only sides to win three straight NFL titles. The 1967 crown came in the "Ice Bowl" against Dallas. Bart Starr won it with a last-minute one-yard sneak in minus 13 temperatures. The Super Bowl trophy now carries Lombardi's name.

The modern revival

Brett Favre's Packers returned to the playoffs in 1993, and in 1996 the club won Super Bowl XXXI. Aaron Rodgers took over from Favre in 2008, and a fourth Super Bowl followed with victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. The club's 13 NFL championships are more than any other franchise has won.

Lambeau Field and earlier homes

The team first played on small fields in Green Bay, then at City Stadium, which was dedicated in 1925. On 3 April 1956, voters approved a referendum to fund a new football-only stadium. It was dedicated on 29 September 1957 with a 21-17 win over the Bears. Curly Lambeau, the club's founder and first coach, died in June 1965, and that September the stadium was renamed Lambeau Field. Expansions and renovations have reshaped it since.

Green Bay's own championship landmarks include:

  • The first NFL title game played in Green Bay, a 37-0 win over the Giants in 1961
  • The January 1966 title win over Cleveland, played after four inches of snow were cleared from Lambeau Field

From 1937 to 1994, home games were split between Green Bay and Milwaukee. The Packers first played at Milwaukee County Stadium in 1953. Today they play home games exclusively at Lambeau Field.

Historic opponents

The series with the Chicago Bears began at Chicago in 1921. Green Bay first beat the Bears in 1925, in front of a record home crowd. The Dallas Cowboys were the Ice Bowl opponents, and they also ended three Packers playoff runs in the 1990s.
