Dallas Cowboys Tickets and the Rise of America's Team
The Dallas Cowboys arrived in 1960 as the NFL's first successful new team since the All-America Football Conference collapsed a decade earlier. Majority owner Clint Murchison Jr. began by hiring Tex Schramm as general manager, Tom Landry as head coach and Gil Brandt as player personnel director. Success took time. The 1960 side, playing at the Cotton Bowl, managed only one tie in 12 games, and Dallas did not break even until 1965.
Twenty Winning Seasons
The turning point came in 1966, the first of an NFL-record 20 consecutive winning seasons. That run brought 18 playoff years, 13 divisional championships and five trips to the Super Bowl. Along the way, Dallas lost the NFL championship game to the Green Bay Packers in both 1966 and 1967, then fell 16-13 to Baltimore on a last-second finish in Super Bowl V after the 1970 season. Victories in Super Bowls VI and XII followed.
Three Homes, One Identity
The Cotton Bowl
The Cowboys played at the Cotton Bowl from 1960 into the 1971 season. Originally Fair Park Stadium, it replaced an earlier wooden ground razed in 1930 and took the Cotton Bowl name in January 1936, recognising that more cotton was raised within 200 miles of Dallas than around any other American town. In November 1966 it staged the first Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas, drawing the largest home crowd in club history until 2009.
Texas Stadium
Next came Texas Stadium in the Dallas suburb of Irving. The Cowboys opened it on October 24, 1971 and called it home for 38 seasons, until a final game on December 20, 2008. Its most distinctive feature was a partial roof that sheltered fans while leaving the game outdoors: the famous hole in the roof. The stadium was imploded in April 2010.
AT&T Stadium and the Arlington Era
Officials in Dallas rebuffed plans to build the club's new stadium there. On November 2, 2004, Arlington voters approved a public-private partnership with the Cowboys, and the club moved to Arlington for the 2009 season. Designed by HKS Architects, the building opened on May 27, 2009 as Cowboys Stadium and was renamed AT&T Stadium on July 25, 2013.
Design That Remembers Texas Stadium
For a club nicknamed America's Team, the design balanced innovation with tradition. With the retractable roof open, the gap has exactly the same shape as the old Texas Stadium opening, rounded corners included. The Ring of Honor and the Tom Landry statue were also carried over as part of the Texas Stadium heritage.
- Two boxed arches rise 292 feet above the field and span 1,290 feet, supporting the roof over a column-free interior.
- Each end zone has a five-leaf clear glass retractable door, 120 feet high and 180 feet wide, and the building also features a canted glass wall.
- The centre-hung video board was, at the time, the world's largest LED videoboard.
- Luxury boxes sit at field level, paired with plush seats intended to give the stadium a five-star hotel feel.
Beyond Cowboys Football
AT&T Stadium hosted Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011, the first Super Bowl in the region. It also staged the NCAA Men's Final Four in April 2014 and the first College Football Playoff National Championship Game on January 12, 2015.
Planning a Cowboys Game Day
AT&T Stadium sits in the heart of Arlington's entertainment district rather than in Dallas itself, so base game-day plans around Arlington. TixChoice compares ticket sellers, and the seller you select completes the purchase.
