Soldier Field events and home teams

Soldier Field events are anchored by the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Fire, the two home teams at this Chicago Park District stadium. It has also staged rock concerts, rodeos, stock-car races, open-air operas and the 2014 NHL Winter Classic.

A Golden Age memorial

Plans began in 1919 for a memorial stadium honouring American soldiers. It opened on October 9, 1924 as the Municipal Grant Park Stadium and became Soldier Field in 1925 at the urging of Chicago's Gold Star Mothers. The original stadium stood on 10,000 pile foundations driven through fill that replaced the lake waters, with fir-plank bleachers and room for temporary seating on an open terrace beyond the north end zone.

Army and Navy drew 21–21 at the 1926 dedication, and the 1927 Dempsey–Tunney rematch became famous for its disputed long count. Soldier Field later hosted the first Special Olympic Games in 1968 and the opening ceremonies of the 1994 World Cup.

The Bears at the lakefront

The Bears beat the Chicago Cardinals 10–0 in the stadium's first professional game in 1926, but moved in only in 1971, after 50 seasons at Wrigley Field. Their first game as tenants, on September 19, 1971, was a 17–15 comeback over Pittsburgh sealed by Kent Nix's fourth-quarter touchdown pass to George Farmer. Statues of George Halas and Walter Payton, each 12 feet tall, were unveiled outside the south end in 2019.

Redevelopment and the modern stadium

Late-1970s reconstruction with the Bears replaced plank-board seating with chair backs and armrests. Skyboxes followed in 1982, with more along the south rim in 1988 as natural grass replaced artificial turf. After Mayor Daley announced the Lakefront Redevelopment Project in 2000, demolition began immediately after a January 2002 playoff game, and the Bears returned for a Monday-night reopening against Green Bay on September 29, 2003. In 2011 Soldier Field became the first existing North American stadium to earn LEED-EB certification.

Its natural-grass field sits above more than 20 miles of tubing carrying warm water and glycol, which helps keep the ground from freezing.

Soldier Field seating plan

The official seating plan comes as a stadium diagram plus a separate suite-level map. The 100 level includes a southwest Mezzanine near Section 128, Club Levels 200 and 300 connect by escalator to the United Club, and Section 438 sits by the upper west concourse. The Miller Lite Midway Club is by Section 136, and elevators at the north and south ends serve the suites.
