Oakland Arena and its indoor setting

Oakland Arena is the enclosed venue beside the separate open-air Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Its main concourse and seating bowl belong to the arena building, while the neighbouring stadium has its own history and events. A pedestrian bridge connects the complex with Coliseum BART station, linking the site with the Bay Area’s rail network. The arena opened in November 1966 and became a long-established indoor setting for sport and entertainment in East Oakland.

A new bowl inside the original structure

The original arena was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Its major 1990s renovation removed the interior and constructed a new seating bowl within the existing structure. The foundations, curtain wall and cable-supported roof were retained, creating a building in which the outer framework and the spectator spaces come from different periods. That distinction is central to the arena’s architectural story.

The work added courtside clubs, suites, expanded food-service facilities and new team spaces. Precast risers formed part of the replacement bowl, while exterior additions were coordinated around the retained building. Demolition began after the 1996 regular basketball season, and the project was completed for the Warriors’ return in autumn 1997. The team spent the intervening season in San Jose while its Oakland home was rebuilt.

Basketball, music and the Legacy Wall

The Warriors had first played at the arena in 1971. Decades later, the building hosted NBA Finals during the championship era of 2015, 2017 and 2018. It carried the Oracle Arena name from 2006 to 2019 before returning to Oakland Arena. Those names identify successive periods of the same indoor venue, with the renovation linking its earlier and later basketball chapters.

The arena also records a long concert history. The Righteous Brothers gave its inaugural musical performance in 1966, and later appearances included the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Green Day and Paul McCartney. A Legacy Wall on the main concourse near sections 112–117 commemorates performers, athletes and influential figures associated with the building. Murals elsewhere include tributes connected with Elton John and Prince, placing parts of its musical history within the routes around the seating bowl.
