A desert stadium built to change shape

Completed in August 2006 and originally called University of Phoenix Stadium, State Farm Stadium was designed by New York architect Peter Eisenman with HOK Sports and Hunt Construction Group. It was the first venue in North America to combine a retractable roof with a retractable field. The Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority owns it, and ASM Global operates it.

The exterior design references a snake coiled around a barrel cactus. A skin of 10,000 metal panels catches the shifting desert light, while 21 vertical glass slots give people inside views of the desert horizon.

The rolling grass field

The playing surface is a single tray of Tifway 419 grass, 234 feet wide and 403 feet long. It travels on 13 parallel rails and takes roughly 70 minutes to move in or out. On football days it sits inside the bowl; the rest of the time it stays outdoors to receive sunlight and water.

With the tray outside, the building opens up a 164,000 square-foot event floor. That flexibility is why concerts, motorsports, trade shows and international soccer share the stadium with natural-grass football.

Roof and climate

Two retractable panels of translucent Bird-Air fabric run on steel rails, supported by a Burnell truss roof superstructure. Because the roof operates at an incline, designers rated controlling it among their hardest problems and solved it with a 480-horsepower system of cable drums. The panels generally stay closed in the hot summer months for air conditioning and open in cooler months to let in the Valley's sunshine.

Seating and premium areas

Fixed seating expands for mega-events, and customisable seating arrangements let the stadium shift between formats as different as NFL football and the NCAA Men's Final Four. Premium choices include lofts and club seats, and the design incorporates suites and concourse spaces.
