U.S. Bank Stadium events and the Vikings
U.S. Bank Stadium is owned by the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority. The Minnesota Vikings are its major tenant, but the building was designed to host a wide array of events for the community and the state. Community use includes the Minnesota State High School League football and soccer championships every autumn.
From the Metrodome to a new home
In May 2012 the Minnesota Legislature and the Minneapolis City Council approved funding for a multi-purpose stadium to replace the Metrodome. The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, the Vikings and HKS Sports and Entertainment unveiled the design a year later. Construction took just over two and a half years and finished six weeks ahead of schedule, and the stadium opened in July 2016 with a two-day public open house.
Architecture: a transparent roof and giant doors
The roof is the building's signature. About 60% of it is ETFE, a transparent material roughly one-hundredth the weight of glass, so far less steel was needed to support it. It is the largest transparent ETFE roof in the nation. The roofline peaks at the West Prow and drops to its lowest point at the East End.
Five hydraulic pivoting glass doors, described as the largest in the world, open the building to the downtown Minneapolis skyline.
Inside the stadium
The stadium is arranged over seven distinct levels. Two general admission concourses offer 360-degree circulation, while premium guests use six club spaces, two private bars and suites.
Historic events
- The first event was an International Champions Cup match between A.C. Milan and Chelsea.
- The first concert, a sold-out Luke Bryan show, was followed the next night by a sold-out Metallica performance.
- In 2017 it became the first NFL stadium to host ESPN's Summer X Games.
- Super Bowl LII in 2018 was the first "Zero Waste" Super Bowl.
- The 2019 NCAA Men's Final Four drew a record-setting sporting event attendance.
The design won Best Sport Design at the 2017 World Architecture Fair.
