Chicago Blackhawks tickets and club history

Chicago’s NHL franchise was approved in September 1926. Founder Frederic McLaughlin named the club after the military battalion in which he had served.

The first Blackhawks game took place at the Chicago Coliseum in November 1926, with Chicago defeating Toronto’s St. Patricks before its inaugural home crowd.

Stan Mikita’s Chicago career

Stan Mikita joined the Blackhawks in 1958 and remained with the club throughout his twenty-two-year NHL career. Born in Czechoslovakia, he had moved to Canada as a child before developing into one of hockey’s leading players. His Chicago years included the 1961 Stanley Cup championship and an exceptional individual achievement: winning the Hart, Art Ross and Lady Byng trophies in the same season. Mikita accomplished that combination in 1966-67 and repeated it the following year. His story links a childhood move across the Atlantic with an entire NHL career representing one city.

Denis Savard and the spin-o-rama

Chicago selected Denis Savard third overall in the 1980 draft. He introduced himself with three assists in his first NHL game and became known for the spin-o-rama, turning a full circle while carrying the puck. That distinctive attacking move gave supporters a different expression of Chicago hockey from the power and physicality often associated with the sport. Savard played for the Blackhawks in two separate spells, later returning to the club as a coach. His number eighteen was retired in 1998, and he entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000.

The championship years

The Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup victories span 1934, 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013 and 2015, connecting their earliest decades with a later run of success.

The 2013 final produced a particularly dramatic finish against Boston. Trailing late in the sixth game at TD Garden, Chicago drew level through Bryan Bickell before Dave Bolland put the team ahead. The sudden reversal settled the series without a return to Chicago for a deciding game. Patrick Kane received the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. That championship followed the club’s 2010 victory, which had ended a long wait for the Cup and began a new era of title celebrations.

Blackhawks hockey at United Center

United Center opened in 1994 as a shared home for the Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls. The project grew from a partnership between William Wirtz and Jerry Reinsdorf, with construction beginning in 1992. The arena has also hosted the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four, adding college hockey to its professional role.

A later east-side addition brought a glass-fronted atrium and a new box office to the building. HOK led the design of that extension, which opened in 2017. Its public gathering space also became the home of the Michael Jordan statue, reflecting the building’s shared sporting identity.
