Red and black since 1899
Herbert Kilpin founded AC Milan on 16 December 1899, choosing red to suggest fire and black to strike fear into opponents, and promising a team of devils. The first celebrations took place at the club's original headquarters, the Fiaschetteria Toscana on Via Berchet. Success came quickly: on 5 May 1901 the Rossoneri beat Genoa at Ponte Carrega to become champions of Italy for the first time, under the English president Alfred Edwards.
A European heavyweight
Milan have long measured themselves against the continent's best. In 1963 they became the first Italian team to win the European Cup, at Wembley, and a second followed in May 1969 at the Bernabéu in Madrid. The Arrigo Sacchi years took the club to new heights, with two more European Cups, and in 1988 Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard filled the top three places in the Ballon d'Or voting.
Fabio Capello's side won four Scudetti in five seasons and went 58 games unbeaten between May 1991 and March 1993. Supporters later voted the 1994 victory over Barcelona in Athens the Match of the Century. Carlo Ancelotti then added two Champions League titles, and from December 2007 to February 2014 no club held more international titles recognised by FIFA. The 19th Scudetto, won in 2022, showed the appetite remains. Franco Baresi, who played 719 official matches, is honoured by the retired number 6 shirt.
San Siro
The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza was founded by Milan and opened with a derby on 19 September 1926. It is named after Giuseppe Meazza, who scored 284 goals in twenty years at Inter, but it is also known as San Siro after the surrounding district, and it is nicknamed the Scala of football. The towering third ring was added for the 1990 World Cup. The ground has framed many Milan landmarks, including the 1951 title, clinched there after a 44-year wait when news of Inter's defeat sent the crowd into celebration.
Inside the stadium, the museum opened on 5 October 1996 as the first Italian museum created in a football stadium. Across two floors and more than 70 showcases, it tells the story of the ground and both Milanese clubs.
