Roots of a 1927 Merger

Associazione Sportiva Roma was born in 1927 from the merger of three Rome clubs: Fortitudo-ProRoma, Football Club di Roma and Alba-Audace. Under first president Italo Foschi, the club adopted the Capitoline Wolf for its crest and the city's yellow and red. It won its first title, the CONI Cup, in 1927-28.

Campo Testaccio and Early Rivalries

Roma's roots lie in the working-class district of Testaccio. The club trained at Campo Testaccio between 1929 and 1940. A month after the move came the first derby against Lazio, settled by a Rodolfo Volk goal. The Juventus rivalry also began in the 1930s. A 5-0 win over the Bianconeri at Campo Testaccio in 1931 inspired a film directed by Mario Bonnard.

European Nights at the Olimpico

Roma's first international success came in the 1960-61 Fairs Cup. After knocking out Hibernian along the way, Roma faced Birmingham City in the final and won the return leg 2-0 at the Olimpico. Two Italian Cups followed during the 1960s, the second in 1969.

The Lupetto and a Modern Identity

Gaetano Anzalone became president in 1971. He introduced marketing and merchandising, oversaw construction of the Trigoria training ground and built the backbone of the 1982-83 Scudetto-winning side. He turned to graphic designer Piero Gratton, whose 1974-75 season ticket card introduced AS in yellow and red with Roma in black. Gratton's stylised wolf's head, the Lupetto, became an official club logo on 30 June 1978 and was unveiled that July. It was not immediately popular, but it has appeared on Roma kits through the decades since.

Unione Tifosi Romanisti

On 23 January 2000, club representatives, fan associations and hundreds of supporters met in the Stadio Olimpico conference hall to form Unione Tifosi Romanisti. More than 500 clubs and 90,000 Romanisti joined over its first 21 years. Its motto, Roma mai sola, means Roma never alone.

Where to Sit With AS Roma Tickets

Roma share the Stadio Olimpico with Lazio. The Curva Sud is home to Roma's ultras. Most season ticket holders and regular supporters traditionally sit there, so it offers the most passionate atmosphere and can sell out. At the opposite end, the Curva Nord is the traditional Lazio end and often has significant availability on matchdays.

Along the sides, the Tribuna Tevere and Monte Mario both offer sideline views. The Tevere has dedicated areas for families and supporters with disabilities. Monte Mario is on the same side as the dugouts and holds the matchday hospitality options.

Getting to the Stadio Olimpico

The nearest metro stop is Ottaviano on Line A, around a 30-minute walk from the ground. The 32 bus from outside the station covers most of the way. You can also take the No. 2 tram from Flaminio to Mancini, which is a short walk across the Tiber.

Plans for a New Stadium

On 23 December 2025, Roma delivered the technical and economic feasibility study for its new stadium. The plans feature a monumental Curva Sud, described as the largest in Europe, and architecture inspired by Roman tradition. In a September 2026 statement on the Pietralata stadium, the club welcomed the conclusion of the decision-making Services Conference and the declaration of public utility that followed. Lazio will continue to play at the Olimpico once Roma move.
