A club founded on a Turin bench

Juventus dates from 1 November 1897, when a group of friends met on a bench on Corso Re Umberto, one of central Turin's grand avenues, and decided to form a club purely for football, then a recent import from England. They attended the Massimo D'Azeglio classical high school, and none was older than 17.

In 1923 goalkeeper Giampiero Combi made his first-team debut, and on 24 July shareholders elected Edoardo Agnelli, son of FIAT's founder, as president. By then the club had its own pitch on Corso Marsiglia, with masonry stands and growing crowds. A second national title came in 1925/26 after a play-off against Bologna and a final with Alba Roma. Between 1930 and 1935 Juventus won five consecutive championships, the Golden five-year period under coach Carlo Carcano. In 1985 it became the first club to win every available international trophy.

The Comunale years

For decades Juventus played at what became the Stadio Comunale di Torino. A classic of rationalist architecture, it was built in the fascist era and originally named after Mussolini, with the Torre Maratona nearby. It opened on 14 May 1933 and staged matches at the 1934 World Cup.

Building Allianz Stadium

The current home rose on the foundations of the former Stadio Delle Alpi, with construction starting at the end of June 2009. Its designers aimed to preserve the old stadium's architectural memory while giving Turin a new landmark. The brief was a stadium dedicated to football, promising an excellent view from every seat, no architectural barriers and large entrances.

It opened on 8 September 2011 as Juventus Stadium, giving the club a ground of its own, and has carried the Allianz Stadium name since 2017/18.

Nights that shaped the ground

The first competitive match, on 11 September 2011, ended in a 4-1 win over Parma, with Stephan Lichtsteiner scoring first and Parma's goal coming from Juventus youth product Sebastian Giovinco. On 13 May 2012, the day of the Scudetto celebrations, Alessandro Del Piero scored in his final Juventus appearance. Between 2015 and 2017 the team went 57 consecutive Serie A home games unbeaten.

On 8 March 2020 a 2-0 win over Inter was played behind closed doors as the COVID-19 emergency began. On 29 September 2021 Federico Chiesa scored ten seconds into the second half to beat reigning European champions Chelsea 1-0. In 2022 Juventus Women staged a comeback to beat Lyon 2-1 in a Champions League quarter-final first leg, and that May the stadium hosted the UEFA Women's Champions League final.

The Continassa citadel

The plan to redevelop Continassa, an abandoned site alongside the stadium, was unveiled at the ground itself. It has become a Bianconeri citadel: the club moved its registered offices beside the stadium on 17 July 2017, and the men's first-team training centre followed from 2018/19. Youth and women's teams train at Vinovo, opened in 2006. In 2018/19 Juventus also became the first Italian club to invest in a second team, Juventus Next Gen.
