From Naples football roots to SSC Napoli

Napoli trace football in their city back to the late 1800s and to the Naples Cricket & Foot-Ball Club, founded in 1906. In 1911 a group of that club's foreign members set up Unione Sportiva Internazionale Napoli. The two clubs merged in 1922 as Foot-Ball Club Internazionale-Naples.

An assembly on 25 August 1926 renamed the club Associazione Calcio Napoli. In 1964 it became Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, the name it still uses. Supporters collectively chose 1 August 1926 as the symbolic founding date. The Corsiero del Sole, or Steed of the Sun, was the club's very first symbol. It is also an ancient emblem of Naples itself.

Scudetti, cups and the Maradona era

Napoli's official roll of honours lists four Italian championships, won in 1986-87, 1989-90, 2022-23 and 2024-25. The first two belong to the Maradona era. UEFA's club records listed Diego Maradona as Napoli's top scorer, with 115 goals between 1984 and 1991. The club's UEFA Cup triumph came in the same period, in 1988-89.

The 2023 title ended a 33-year wait for the Scudetto, and the fourth followed two seasons later. Napoli have also lifted six Italian Cups: 1961-62, 1975-76, 1986-87, 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2019-20. The 2014 final was won against Fiorentina. In the 2019-20 final, Napoli beat Juventus on penalties.

Three Italian Super Cups, the 1965-66 Coppa delle Alpi and the 1976 Anglo-Italian League Cup complete the list. UEFA's records also named Giuseppe Bruscolotti as the club's appearance leader, with 511 games from 1972 to 1988.

A club built on its supporters

Napoli describe themselves as one of Italy's best-loved clubs. They cite market surveys that place their fans among the top four in the country for both numbers and enthusiasm. Aurelio De Laurentiis was appointed president in August 2004, and within three years the club had regained its place in Serie A.

Napoli's home ground, formerly the San Paolo, was inaugurated in 1959 in the Fuorigrotta neighbourhood. The club ranks it as Italy's third-largest stadium, behind Milan's Meazza and Rome's Olimpico, and gives its dimensions as 110 by 68 metres.

Two rebuilds shaped the ground. It was remodelled for the 1980 European Championship and again for the 1990 World Cup in Italy. For the World Cup, a covering and a new press stand were installed, the track and lighting were redone and the stadium was brought up to FIFA safety standards.

The venue also has an eight-lane track and several gyms, including spaces for boxing and martial arts. These make it Naples' major sports centre as well as a football ground.

The club's sector guide presents the stadium's sectors across a lower ring (Anello Inferiore) and an upper ring (Anello Superiore). Check which ring a listing sits in when comparing seats.

Napoli use the stadium under a concession signed with the City of Naples on 17 October 2019. It covered the seasons from 2018-19 to 2022-23. In 2023 it was renewed for a further five years, running to 30 June 2028.
