Middlesbrough tickets and a club born in 1876

Middlesbrough tickets lead to a club whose story begins with cricketers. In 1876, players from Middlesbrough CC dyed their white kit blue and took up the new game of football for the winter months, forming the first-ever Boro team. The club was officially formed at the Albert Park Hotel on Linthorpe Road. In October 2026, a civic reception at Middlesbrough Town Hall, a little over a mile away, marked 150 years since that founding.

Those early colours returned for the anniversary as a navy shirt with darker blue shorts. Inside its hem are William Gladstone's words branding Middlesbrough the "Infant Hercules", a reminder of how closely club and town are tied. Speakers at the anniversary reception, including the Mayor of Middlesbrough, emphasised the club's significance to Teesside and its people.

Riverside Stadium: the Middlehaven home

The Riverside Stadium has been home to Middlesbrough Football Club in Middlehaven since 1995. Middlesbrough Council describes it as one of the town's most famous landmarks. It anchors a wider regeneration area that has also gained a new Middlesbrough College building and Anish Kapoor's sculpture Temenos, which forms the centrepiece of upgraded public spaces.

Club information refers to the North Stand and the West Stand, and the Club Shop sits beside the West Stand concourse. Earlier club matchday material also mentions a Generation Red Family Zone inside the ground.

Art around the stadium

It is worth arriving early to see the artwork beside the ground. In May 2025 the Mayor unveiled a Ceefax-style mural beneath the Shepherdson Way bridge. The council commissioned it from pixel street artist ZX.8BIT, and it recreates the teletext full-time result from the 2004 League Cup final. Close by, another piece celebrates Ali Brownlee's famous commentary from a UEFA Cup semi-final. The council expects plenty of fans to stop there for photographs.

Cardiff 2004 and the first European adventure

The 2003/04 League Cup, then known as the Carling Cup, brought the club its first major trophy. Steve McClaren's side beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in the final in Cardiff. The council regards that triumph as the greatest day in Boro's history, and it led to the club's first campaign in Europe.

On a cold 7 March 2004, the club paraded the trophy around the town on an open-top bus. Outside the Riverside, former Boro defender Gareth Southgate spoke to a mass of supporters in red and white shirts. He told them that the club, the town and its people were all now winners.

Recent second-tier seasons

In the Championship, Boro reached the play-off semi-finals in 2022/23 and were beaten there by Coventry City.
