A club born in a springs factory

West Bromwich Albion began in 1878, formed by young workers at the George Salter Springs factory. It was a fitting start for supporters whose terrace celebration later became “boing boing”. Club legend says the founders walked to neighbouring Wednesbury to buy a ball, and they played as West Bromwich Strollers before taking the Albion name. Albion were the first Midlands side to reach an FA Cup final, in 1886. They lifted the trophy in 1888 by beating Preston North End 2-1.

Honours that define the Baggies

  • 1920: the club's only First Division title, won in record-breaking style.
  • 1931: the FA Cup and promotion in the same season. No other club has completed that double, and the promotion was sealed against Charlton Athletic at The Hawthorns.
  • 1953/54: a fourth FA Cup, won by beating Preston 3-2, for the side christened the “Team of the Century”.
  • 1966: the League Cup, with a 5-3 aggregate win over West Ham United. Albion were the last team to win it on their own ground.
  • 1968: a fifth FA Cup, won 1-0 against Everton at Wembley, from ten FA Cup finals in all.

Albion were the first English club to win a game in the Soviet Union, in 1957, and the first to visit China, in 1978. Their use of Cyrille Regis, Brendon Batson and Laurie Cunningham, known as the “Three Degrees”, was significant in the acceptance of black footballers in the English game. Albion were bottom of the Premier League at Christmas 2004. They then became the first club in its history to survive from there, completing the “Great Escape”.

The Black Country derby with Wolves has deep roots. In 2001/02 Albion clawed back an 11-point gap on their arch-rivals to snatch the second automatic promotion place.

West Brom tickets at The Hawthorns

Albion bought the land on 30 January 1900, leaving Stoney Lane, which the club held only on a short-term lease. The new ground was built on the old Hawthorns Estate, where hawthorn bushes once grew. It opened on 3 September 1900 after just four months of construction and was the first Football League ground built in the 20th century. Derby County's Steve Bloomer scored its first goal. Early crowds were mainly housed in “Noah's Ark”, a stand moved brick by brick from Stoney Lane. At 551 feet above sea level, it is the highest Football League ground in the country.

How the stands took shape

  • East Stand: the 1964 original replaced the old Handsworth Stand. It became known as the “Rainbow” for its brightly painted seats, while the old stand was recycled to cover the Brummie Road End terracing. The Rainbow's final match came on 1 January 2001. Its replacement, ready for the first home game of 2001/02, made the ground fully enclosed.
  • Halfords Lane side: rebuilt in two phases between 1979 and 1982, adding more executive boxes.
  • Birmingham Road End and Smethwick End: two new stands completed in 1995 replaced the terracing at both ends as the club moved to an all-seater ground after the Hillsborough disaster.

Landmark moments at the Shrine

Floodlights were officially unveiled on 19 October 1957 with a 6-5 friendly win over CDSA Moscow. The Hawthorns staged the first 5-5 draw in Premier League history, against Manchester United on 19 May 2013. Albion Women played their first game there on 6 March 2022. Look out too for the Astle Gates at a ground that marked its 125th anniversary in September 2025.
