Millwall tickets and the Lions’ story
Millwall’s history connects several London grounds with some memorable runs far beyond SE16. The club began as Millwall Rovers in 1885, with its formation recorded at The Islanders on Tooke Street. Early home grounds included Glengall Road, the Lord Nelson Ground on East Ferry Road, the Athletic Grounds and North Greenwich. The familiar Den name arrived later, when Millwall moved into a newly built ground in 1910.
Those successive homes help explain an unusual feature of the club’s identity: the Millwall name predates both stadiums called The Den. The ground associated with Cold Blow Lane served the club until 1993. Its final match took place on 8 May that year, after which the site was demolished and redeveloped for housing.
From the Old Den to the present ground
The replacement stadium was initially called the New Den, distinguishing it from its predecessor. The move was a short one, just over a quarter of a mile to the north-west, rather than a departure from this part of London. Today’s ground is on John Berylson Way in South Bermondsey.
Its seating areas carry names that recur throughout Millwall match listings:
- The Barry Kitchener Stand forms one side of the ground.
- The Dockers Stand is on the east side.
- Cold Blow Lane is the south stand, preserving the name associated with the former ground.
- The North Stand is designated for visiting supporters on the club’s stadium plan.
The plan also identifies Zampa’s Family Stand, executive boxes and a separate visiting-supporters walkway. These are distinct parts of the ground’s matchday arrangement, rather than interchangeable names for the same area.
Top-flight football and a cup-final run
Promotion in 1988 took Millwall into the top flight, and the Lions finished tenth in their first season there. Teddy Sheringham’s goals became another landmark of that era: by 1991 he had scored 111 times in all competitions for the club, including 93 Football League goals.
Cup football supplied a different set of memories. Millwall overcame both Arsenal and Chelsea after replays in the 1995 FA Cup. In 2004 the club reached the FA Cup final, a significant chapter alongside its league promotions and ground moves.
A matchday at The Den
South Bermondsey is the nearest railway station, with services from London Bridge. The club also lists Canada Water and Bermondsey on the Jubilee line among the walking approaches. Inside the ground, hospitality uses different entrances: the Barry Kitchener Stand serves Club 1885, No. 11 and Docherty’s, while the boxes use the Dockers Stand.
