Wrexham tickets and the world's oldest international ground

Wrexham AFC was founded in 1864 and played its first match at its Mold Road home in October that year. Apart from a brief move between 1881 and 1883, the club has played there ever since. The stadium now carries the STōK Cae Ras name, though the club also still calls it the Racecourse Ground. That name recalls a site where horse racing may have been recorded some 400 years ago.

On 5 March 1877 the ground staged Wales' first ever home international, against Scotland. It is the world's oldest international football stadium still in continuous use, and the leader of Wrexham Council has called the city the spiritual home of Welsh football.

From the National League to the Championship

The modern era began when Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds took over the club in February 2021. Over the next five years the Red Dragons climbed from the National League to the EFL Championship. That rise included three consecutive promotions, which the club celebrates as its "Back to Back to Back" run. The 2022–2025 pitch that carried the team through those seasons has since been replaced. Reynolds has described looking around the ground now as a "pinch-me moment".

The new Kop Stand

The Kop sits at the centre of the ground's redevelopment. In October 2024 the club appointed Populous as architect, after pausing and reviewing earlier plans and running a full tender. The design was unveiled in February 2025. A groundbreaking ceremony on 4 December 2025 marked the start of main construction with McLaren Construction. At that point the stand was set for completion during the 2026/27 season, restoring the stadium's traditional four-sided enclosure.

Designed as the home end

  • The seating bowl is shaped to create a home end, with a roof designed to amplify supporters' noise.
  • Safe standing is provided alongside hospitality and accessible seating.
  • Player and officials' facilities inside the stand let fans welcome the team onto the pitch through a tunnel in the heart of the Kop.

Rooted in Wrexham brick

The rear façade honours the city's "Terracottapolis" nickname with Ruabon-style red brick. The brick is laid in a contemporary take on the Flemish bond pattern found across Wrexham. A lattice effect allows views into and out of the stand, and angled planes echo local coal and slate seams. Two dragons from the club crest are embossed at one corner.

A plaza for matchdays and beyond

Behind the stand, a public plaza is planned as a fan space on matchdays and a community space throughout the year. Plans include the sister wheel of the Gresford Colliery wheel, remembering the miners who died in the 1934 disaster. The stand is also designed to meet UEFA Category 4 standards, part of the club's aim to bring international sport back to Wrexham.

Getting to Mold Road

The STōK Cae Ras is on Mold Road in Wrecsam. The new Kop is designed as a landmark visible from the city centre, standing at the gateway to Wrexham. It is part of the Wrexham Gateway project, which the council links to improved connectivity.
